Shoppers in the Kingfisher Shopping Centre, Redditch

Shoppers all in a clinically clean environment.

They may provide a covered experience, with everything in one place, but these modern malls do not have the atmosphere of the traditional High Street. This particular example has pretty much replaced the Town Centre, destroying the much of the history. Part of the problem is the inward design of the complex, making it a destination in itself and not incorporating the town that it is in. This is the Kingfisher Shopping Centre, Redditch. The theory is great. Everything all in one place. All under cover. Bus station underneath, train station opposite. Cinema, restaurants and shops all under cover in a clean, air conditioned cocoon. But it is like a vacuum, sucking the life of the old town into it. Progress? Maybe – maybe not. Slow exposure, to create feel of movement.
