Tim's One Photograph a Day

Surviving relic of both rail and freight heyday.

Just a couple of stations further north from Droitwich Spa is Kidderminster. Surprisingly, whilst the former station is full of Great Western lower quadrant signals and signal box, here we have the latest in LED signalling. The train in the shot has just terminated and is moving off to a siding to wait its return to Dorridge. More of interest here, though, is the former Great Western Railway’s Goods and Coal Depot.

Many stations would have had a coal yard in their day. Even today, some still remain, although most likely not served by rail. This depot, or transfer facility, now survives as workshops for the adjacent Severn Valley Railway.
