This was once the heart of the industrial canals of Birmingham. Now redeveloped into a leisure location, Old Turn Junction is a prominent part of the City. The canal served two termini – one at Paradise Street (now known as Gas Street Basin) and another at Newall Street (now Cambrian Wharf). A further connection was added when the “New Main Line” was built, bypassing what then became the Oozells Street loop.

The addition of the Birmingham & Fazeley Canal effectively extended the Newall Street Branch. Although this is now often regarded as the junction of the two canals, technically the junction is at the top of the lock flight.

Old Turn Junction also now leads onto the Birmingham & Worcester Canal. Again, though, this is not the junction. That is formed of an “end on” connection at the Worcester Bar.
