Bridges Across the Tyne: Looking along the river.

Looking along the river.

Today’s photograph was taken on the journey home. We are in Newcastle, viewing some of the Bridges across the Tyne. This shot was taken from the King Edward Railway Bridge.

The bridge we are on was built in 1906 by the North Eastern Railway Company. It still carries the main London Kings Cross to Edinburgh railway line. The bright blue bridge is the Queen Elizabeth II bridge, carrying the Tyne & Wear Metro trains. It was completed in 1981.

The red bridge you can see at the bottom of the blue bridge is the Swing Bridge. Work started on this in 1873, as is the fourth bridge on the site.

Behind that, and seen at the top of the blue bridge, is the “High Level Bridge”. Construction started in 1847. Now a Grade I listed structure, it is rare as it was designed from the outset to carry a railway line on a top deck and a roadway underneath. It still performs both functions today.

Last of the bridges across the Tyne in the photograph is Tyne Bridge. Dating back to 1928, its similarity to the Sydney Harbour Bridge is due to it being designed by the same company.

Beyond, but not visible in this shot, is the Millenium Bridge.
