Hawne Basin 1 mile!

Of all the tunnels we have done on the system so far, this one rates as one of my least favourites! We have done it three times in each direction now. The first time just to say we have cruised this particular bit of canal, the other two to get the benefits of the cheap coal and diesel at the current terminus – Hawne Basin. This for us is the main reason to cruise through the Gosty Hill Tunnel, with its varying heights.

As you can see in this shot, there is a dramatic drop in the roof height partway through. This comes as quite a shock if you are not aware of it, as there is no warning as you enter with the original cavernous height! Quite what the history is between all the various heights throughout is something of a mystery, but it may be something to do with historic repairs resulting in rebuilt sections being higher.
