W E Boone and Co Ltd - Hardware Shop in Poole

W E Boone & Co Ltd of Poole.

Regulars of this blog will be beginning to realise my love of old buildings! There is something particularly special about this one, though. It really is a piece of living history.

A trip to Poole & Bournemouth today, for family reasons. Walking along the High Street (now pedestrianised), I spotted this treasure. To be fair, there is a lot of history in the High Street, but this shop stands out above all others.

No crass neon signs. Just beautifully painted ones. And, in good condition. One can almost imagine “Arkwrights” painstakingly hand-painted above the doorway!

W E Boone and Co Ltd is one of the oldest hardware stores in the country. It was established in 1820. The shop oozes tradition. Almost as a tribute to its roots, it does not have a website. However, it does have a book written about it.

I wish I had had time to investigate the inside. But, there are photographs available on the wonderfully entitled website “Have You Got Four Candles”. This is in tribute to the fact that you could walk into W E Boone and Co, and expect to see the Two Ronnies in there, performing their famous sketch.
