Track works at Wolverhampton Station.

Ballast train.

We had a very rude awakening this morning. Around 6am, there was the sound of what we thought at first was a very heavy duty road sweeper. It took a while to work out that the noise wasn’t coming from the road – neither did it appear to be moving. Eventually, we worked out it was coming from the railway. There were “Orange men” and some very heavy machinery clearly doing some track works on the lines just outside the station.

We subsequently discovered that the main noise was coming from a “Rail Vac”, so we were close with our original guess! They are apparently replacing rails and cleaning as well as replacing ballast. I wasn’t allowed on the station to take a photograph of the work, but did manage to get this shot from outside of one of the two ballast trains.
