Needles and a thread made into the pavement in Redditch

Tribute to the industry that built Redditch.

Many towns grew up around a particular industry. Often they made the towns extremely prosperous. More often, they made certain individuals extremely wealthy. We have already learnt that the Smallwood family made their fortune and contributed to the well-being of their community by contributing financially to Almshouses and the local hospital. The industry that Redditch was built on was Needles. As a tribute to this history, there is a very unusual sculpture in one of the streets. There is also a brick representation of a thread running through the eye of the left-hand needle. A plaque in the pavement gives further details.
