Hillmorton Bottom Locks.

First of the flight of three pairs heading south.

What a difference to last night! Hardly a breath of wind. Just look how smooth the canal is compared to last night’s shot of Badsey’s Wharf. Today’s photograph of Hillmorton Bottom Locks is looking towards where last night’s was taken.For the novice boater coming to these locks for the first time, it can be quite a surprise. Although in the heydays of the canals paired locks were not uncommon, they are something of a rarity now. Because of the number of hire bases around this area, and the fact that these are the busiest locks in the country, these are normally staffed by volunteer lock keepers.

The lock on the right, number 2, still retains cast iron gates instead of the more usual wooden ones. It is Grade II listed. This would have been the original lock prior to doubling.
