Woodpecker: Nesting in a wooden pole.

Nesting in a wooden pole.

I had today’s photograph sorted early on. Until someone told me there was a woodpecker nesting in a wooden pole supporting some electricity cables!

Naturally, that had to be my photograph! I clambered over a gate into a field to get a better view. It was obviously a bit wary at first, because as I approached it went back in and hid.

Patience was rewarded, though. Eventually, the little chap poked his nose out again. And straight back in again! However, it wasn’t long before he popped his head back out.

He was obviously very inquisitive. A fly landed on the pole near his hole, and he was watching it very intently. It was easy to line up the shot of this woodpecker, and in the end I got quite a few.

Naturally, I wasn’t able to get as close as this image suggests. I haven’t got the very long focal length lens that a shot like this demands. However, I have been able to crop the original image to the size I usually publish on this blog.
