Wind Turbine: Generating power.

Generating power.

A modern version of the windmill, standing tall and slim on Shoreham Beach. This Wind Turbine is one of a pair supplying power to Shoreham Port.

The hub is some 24.5 metres tall, and each blade is 11 metres. Each turbine is rated at 100kW, and the two together will generate approx 550,000kWh a year. They are used to supply power to the pumps that put water back in the port lost each time the locks are operated. The turbines have been designed to match the power requirements as closely as possible.

The blades are designed with a variable pitch to give the optimal angle for the wind speed. With a designed mechanical efficiency of over 99%, they are expected to be generating free electricity long after the system costs have been recovered.

Today’s shot was taken near the bottom of the support of this Wind Turbine, looking up. The aperture has been made as small as possible so that the exposure can be made as long as possible. This creates the blur on the movement of the blades.
