Knowle Locks: As remote as they come.

As remote as they come.

By turning this into a sepia shot, this could almost be a timeless photograph. However, Knowle Locks were widened in the 1930s, which means the shot cannot be older than that!Unlike the other flights that were widened, this flight of five replaced the earlier six narrow locks. This would make the journey quicker. Another difference with this flight is the side ponds.

The side ponds, now disused, would have saved water. You can just see the extra paddle gear behind the lock gate.

When a lock was emptied, water would be sent into the side pond, until the levels equalised. The remainder would be emptied into the lower pound. To refill, the stored water would be returned into the lock until the levels were equalised, and then the rest extracted from the upper pound.
