Tim's One Photograph a Day

Shrewley Tunnel on the Grand Union Canal.

Shrewley Tunnel.

Shrewley Tunnel: Opened in 1799, the only one on this section.

Opened in 1799, the only one on this section.

This magnificent structure is on the former Warwick & Birmingham Canal. This was later to become part of the Grand Union. Shrewley Tunnel is 433 yards long, and wide enough to take two 7′ wide boats.I rather enjoyed the reflection of the tunnel in the canal. The stillness of the water making this a pure mirror image. The path to the left would have been the way the horses were taken over the top of the tunnel, leaving the poor boatmen to “leg” their boats through.

The morning was fairly overcast, so I have converted this photograph of Shrewley Tunnel to monochrome.
