Tim's One Photograph a Day

Newbury Police Station: Seen from the towpath of the Kennet & Avon Canal.

Seen from the towpath of the Kennet & Avon Canal.

Hidden behind the trees is the not particularly pretty aspect of the rear of Newbury Police Station. The front’s not much better either!

However, one of the joys of night-time long exposure photography is the complete transformation of the scene. As usual, I have chosen a very small aperture for depth of field, and to “star” the lights.

The ISO was set to 200, to give good colour saturation. This then gives an exposure time of approximately 2 minutes. The resultant image has been manipulated in Photoshop to lighten the dark parts (so the towpath becomes visible), and to darken the very white lights.

The reflections on the canal are very simple, but pleasing. 100 years ago, this scene would have been very different, as this was the entrance to the main wharf in Newbury.
