Rangemaster Building: Scruffy gateway to the town.

Scruffy gateway to the town.

Yesterday I photographed one of the finest buildings in Leamington Spa. Today has to be one of the worst. This is the Rangemaster building by the canal. At first glance, this would appear to be a derelict property. Broken windows abound and it looks in a near state of collapse. Shockingly, on closer inspection, this building is actually still in use!

It is a far cry from the remains of the rather splendid Art Deco building just visible behind it. This fine building, now substantially hidden by this one (and also in a poor state of repair) was built by “Flavels of Leamington” in 1946.

But, not only is this monstrosity on the gateway of the canal, it is also on the gateway of the railway which crosses the canal at this point on the bridge just visible at the top of the photograph.

The Rangemaster building is located at the wharf on what was the Eagle Foundry. The Flavel company moved on to this site back in 1856. There is an interesting background available here, including a picture of the Art Deco building in all its glory.

The top floor of this building was largely given over to the R&D Department in the 1960’s and ’70’s.
I worked an apprentice there until 1971.
