Loch Ness: Unusual Sighting - and it's not the Monster!

Unusual Sighting – and it’s not the Monster!

Today we cruised back, and headed across Loch Ness. Slightly later than intended, but as the weather was nice, we decided to press ahead.

It was an interesting crossing. Scottish Highlands weather at its best. We started our cruise in dingy weather. There was even a hint of rain. However, as we progressed, we got a hint of sun.

On going through Dochgarroch Lock, we asked the lock-keeper for his advice. He recommended that we continued through to Fort Augustus, which we did. Arriving late, we struggled to get a mooring – not helped by the fact that there is a very large boat on the pontoons taking up the space of at least 3 cruisers!

However, our reward for crossing Loch Ness this afternoon was a remarkable weather experience. The sun came out, and it became really hot on the boat. Yet, there were black clouds around.

We noticed that it was quite clearly raining along the edge of the water. The mountains almost disappeared from view in the rain and low cloud. Slowly, the rain crept towards us.

The next hour or so was spent in varying degrees of rain. We could still see blue sky in places, and a glorious mixture of white and black clouds. Then, as we looked back across Loch Ness, we noticed this amazing rainbow. It was almost as if someone had painted the mountain side.

Today’s photograph was taken from the shelter of the back of the boat. We were looking through the rain. The sun is shining on parts of the mountains, yet in the distance they are still covered in mist. This is such a wonderful place to be.
