Canal Basins: Signs of busier times in the past.

Signs of busier times in the past.

Getting nearer into Birmingham, the environment becomes more industrial. Along the way, there are signs of former canal basins, where boats would have been unloaded and/or loaded.Often, the only clues are a raised towpath over the old entrance. In many cases, the area has been filled in, and even the buildings have gone.

Under this bridge nearest the camera there is still signs of where the boats went, although the other side has been bricked up. The bridge just visible in the distance still leads to its old canal basin, which is still in water, but no longer used for its original purpose.

The angle of the entrances under these two bridges suggest that whatever industry used them, their cargoes were coming from and/or going to the Midlands, rather than Warwick (this was built as the Warwick and Birmingham Canal) or London.
