Tim's One Photograph a Day

Night on the Canal: Long exposure turning the night into day!

Long exposure turning the night into day!

Night time long exposures are great fun – even if rather time consuming! This shot of “Night on the Canal” is a 10 minute exposure.

We have moved again, and tonight we are on the outskirts of Braunston. This is often referred to as the “Capital of the Canals”, although many people have never heard of it. It lies around halfway between Rugby and Daventry.

This spot is an area we have moored before. We love it here, as it is open and remote. It is right on the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire border. This section uniquely is both the Oxford and Grand Union Canals, as they both share the waterway between Braunston Turn and Napton Junction.

Wandering along earlier in the evening, I came across a bridge. I noticed the view and realised it would make a good shot for night on the canal later. With virtually no artificial light, there is not so much contrast, creating a good balance between the lit and unlit areas.

What look like dotted white lines across the sky (and reflected on the water) were actually two separate planes that flew over during the exposure.
