Newbury Market – A long Tradition.

Newbury Market: A tradition going back many years.

The main stalls in Newbury.

Twice a week, on Thursdays and Saturdays, Newbury Market fills Market Place (pictured) and Northbrook Street. It is a tradition that goes back many years.

Going back to medieval times, there would have been an annual “fair”. This was essentially a market for Berkshire and North Hampshire, and lasted several days. Records show that there has been some form of market since 1205.

In recent years, traditional markets have declined in popularity. However, once again they are becoming more popular. Today’s looks a little empty, but there are stall aplenty to choose from.

As well as the traditional stalls on Thursdays and Saturdays, on the last Sunday of each month there is an Artisan market.
