Tim's One Photograph a Day

Market Place, Newbury, Berkshire: Pedestrianised shopping.

Pedestrianised shopping.

This is the view of Market Place, Newbury, from the opposite direction from the shot I took on Market day. This is a scene that could be relatively timeless.

The big building to the right is the Corn Exchange, now a Theatre and Cinema. Straight ahead in the centre is the NatWest Bank, as featured previously. To the left is the former Beynon Ltd, a clothing store dating back to 1827. At one time there was a small chapel in an upper room for staff! It is currently an Italian restaurant.

The tall tower on the left belongs to Newbury Town Hall, which will be the subject of a later photograph of the day. The mayor was seen to be throwing pancakes from the balcony, in a tradition that dates back to the 1870s, on pancake day!

Market Place is pedestrianised during the day, but come 5 o’Clock, traffic is allowed onto the paved way. Naturally, this transforms the area, not necessarily for the better. This kind of arrangement is not particularly friendly for the visually impaired, particularly those with Guide Dogs.

I was quite pleased with this shot with the two people walking out of frame.
