Farmers Bridge Locks: New and old meet in perfect harmony.

New and old meet in perfect harmony.

The approach to Birmingham from the north presents the daunting prospect of rising 81′ through 13 locks. These are the famous Farmers Bridge Locks. From the relative outskirts, this flight brings boaters right into the heart of Birmingham. Side ponds hold extra water between the locks, minimising the risk of the pounds running losing too much water.

They also provided turning points for boats going into the many basins down the flight. There was one just below the next lock, where the green fencing is.

Today’s boaters go underneath some of the buildings that now cover some of the canal and the Farmers Bridge Locks. A modern footbridge makes a striking statement around the mid-point of the flight.
