Aldermaston Tea Rooms: Historic Canalside Building

Historic Canalside Building

Situated on Aldermaston Wharf, the Aldermaston Tea Rooms are popular with boaters and locals alike. Aldermaston Wharf is a small, but separate, village, just over a mile north of Aldermaston village itself.

The wharf was a very busy part of the Kennet & Avon Canal. Timber, malt and flour were typically carried from the wharf. Coal was brought in by canal.

The building retains much of its character from its working days. However, land around it has been sold. Modern properties, not particularly in keeping, are springing up alongside. Part of one such structure can be seen just on the right on the photograph.

The interior of the cottage is still very much as it would have been in its early days. Surprisingly, the building does not appear to be listed. With its garden overlooking the canal, it is a lovely place to enjoy the meals and/or tea and coffee that they serve.

Following a somewhat damp and dark morning, the blue sky this afternoon was welcome. I have photographed the Aldermaston Tea Rooms a few times now, but this is the first time with a blue sky!

I chose my angle so that I could include both buildings, and include the Kennet & Avon Canal sign. Staying with the standard lens rather than the wide angle, I had to be careful not to step too far back. I was right on the edge of the canal. There is an interpretation board on the right, giving a bit of information on the history of the area, but nothing of the history of the Aldermaston Tea Rooms itself.
