What a typically British scene. Summer Time has just started today, the sun is out (the wind was cold, though). It’s Mothers’ Day, and people are enjoying walking along by the River Thames in Pangbourne.

There are moored boats, a barbecue, dog walkers, families. Barely a cloud in the sky. Barely a leaf on the tree. Even the grass has yet to green up. But, it’s a beautiful day, and everyone, it seems, is out enjoying the sunshine.

In the background can be seen Whitchurch Toll Bridge. Often incorrectly known as Pangbourne Bridge, it connects the two settlements either side of the Thames. The original was built in 1792, replacing a ferry. This is the third incarnation. The original was replaced in 1852/3, and replaced again in 1901/2. This latter bridge was rebuilt in 2013/4. The structure, including toll houses, is Grade II listed. It is one of only two toll bridges across the Thames.
